The Confirmation class will once again be collecting leftover Halloween candy this year. All candy may be left in the baskets at the church entrances after October 31st

As we prepare for Halloween next weekend, let us also take a moment to remember the difference between All Saints’ Day, a Holy Day of Obligation, and All Souls’ Day.  On All Saints’ Day we celebrate the communion of saints, both those known and unknown, in heaven and are reminded of our call to live as saints. This is a wonderful time to pray to your patron saint. This year All Saints’ Day falls on a Sunday, so the day will be celebrated as part of our normal Sunday liturgy.  All Souls’ Day is a reminder for us to hold close in prayer those souls in purgatory and to pray for all those who have died.

Be sure to thank Father Sas this month for National Clergy Appreciation Month!

We are truly blessed to have such a holy man leading us in our faith journey.

29^th Sunday in Ordinary Time A20

Well, it’s that time of year again – leaves are falling and political signs are springing up like weeds.

Today’s ending sentence in the Gospel^[1] could be used by those who favor a strict separation of Church and State. But the separation is just that; it’s not a divorce. We are citizens of 2 countries, the United States and the Kingdom of God. Do we have a different way of acting and making decisions in each? I hope not. Our faith, if it’s real, genuine and true, must inform how we think and act.

World Mission Sunday is the annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration for the Missions and Missionaries of the world. Pope Francis reminds us, especially in this year of crisis, that as Baptized Catholics we are called to mission to bring Christ’s love to those most forgotten, our brothers and sisters in need around the world. 28^th Sunday in Ordinary Time A20

Today’s readings all center on food provided in abundance by God on whom we are totally dependent. This concentration on having more than enough to eat seems out of touch with our society in which, ironically, dieting is a growth industry! How many ads are there which promise a loss of 10 pounds in the 1^st week or an amount of 25, 50, 100 or more if you eat the prescribed foods or undergo surgery? There was a TV show called “The Biggest Loser” that allowed those a “little” overweight to feel comparably good about the paunch or tire around our waist. That is far different from scriptural times when big meals were far and few between, restaurants pretty much non-existent, and no one dreamed of saying “Do you want fries with that”.

27^th Sunday in Ordinary Time A20

The readings from Isaiah and the Gospel of Matthew are remarkably similar. Was Jesus guilty of plagiarism? Or was he, as the Word of God, the source of inspiration for Isaiah? No matter.  We leave those questions to Scripture scholars.

Whether it’s Isaiah’s friend or Jesus’ landowner, they did all they could in preparation for a bountiful harvest. But something went horribly wrong. In the friend’s case, it yielded wild grapes out of neglect rather the cultivated ones which were much sweeter to the taste and could be eaten fresh, dried out to become raisins, or pressed to make wine. In the landowner’s story, it was the treachery and violence of the tenants who were supposed to be stewards of the vintage for him.
